A very solid second offering by Adele,
This review is from: 21 (Audio CD)
I only started to listen to Adele last year and bought her first album "19" on the strength of "Make Me Feel Your Love" and "Hometown Glory". I was very surprised by the quality of the songs and the songwriting as I had heard her being compared to Amy Winehouse and Duffy, and I am not a fan of either.
I was waiting in anticipation for the second album "21" after I heard her stunning rendition of "Someone Like You" on Jools Holland. After the first listen, I was a little disappointed and found it quite bland as a whole. But the more I have listened to it, the more it has grown on me.
There are many highlights. The album's opener and lead single "Rolling In The Deep" is a very catchy motown sounding track and is followed by "Rumour Has It" which has a similar vibe. "Turning Tables" and "Take It All" are two very heartfelt piano ballads. This acoustic style suits Adele the best. "Set Fire To The Rain" has a rockier edge to it. "He Won't Go" and "I'll Be Waiting" have a funkier, more soulful sound. The best track of the album for me is the ballad "Someone Like You" as it is just such a beautifully crafted song and, once again, shows us how such a simple piano arrangement works accompanied by a distinctive and powerful voice.
The lower points of the album are the country inspired tracks which I do not find really suit Adele. "Don't You Remember" is probably my least favorite track on the album as I find it to be quite bland. "One And Only" has a catchy chorus but lacks originality and sounds a little like an album filler compared to the rest of the songs. "Love Song" is nice, but again, does not live up to the rest of the album. Despite this, they are still strong songs compared to tracks included in other albums I have listened to this year.
This CD remains the best release of this year by far and deserves 4.5 stars. I am sure that, after all her record breaking sales on this one, her next album will be highly anticipated by lots of old and new fans.
