I throughly enjoyed this drama/horror series which to me represents the pinnacle of Japanese anime. Shiki is based in the village of Sotoba in Japan with a population of around 1300. The village is already pretty isolated and has more of an emphasis on its traditions than a big city would. New visitors move into the village but who are they and what are their intentions?
Shiki has a very large cast and at times it is very difficult to follow what is happening due in part to the large cast. However, the plot itself is easy enough to understand and it is in no way too confusing although events do not always take place in chronological order and thanks to the flashbacks and backstories it can become a bit hard to follow though only in certain places.
This is by no means a criticism as I like a plot with some complicated elements. I am impressed with the animation which is well drawn and flows smoothly. The only niggledy criticism I have is that one of the characters, Megumi, can be intensely annoying at times and that the first few episodes are very plot-oriented with sometimes not much happening so it has quite a slow beginning which may be a bit off-putting but in the later episodes the action really picks up and becomes unbelievably fast paced. I would highly recommend this for any anime fans
