Anna Pigeon At Her Strongest,
By A Customer
This review is from: Hunting Season (Hardcover)
Park Ranger, Anna Pigeon's latest atmospheric mystery is set in the Natchez Trace Parkway in Mississppi in the autumn. The visitors centre was closed. A local man is found murdered & still in his underpants. It looks like death during heavy sex-play. The discovery of anything so kinky in a puritanical community is inconvenient to say the least. Anna's promotion to Park Ranger over local men was obviously resented - making it difficult to solve crimes as a outsider - every move she makes tightens the grip the locals have on the clues. It is a tightly plotted, beautifully-written story with secrets from history that cause anger & eventually threaten Anna's life. She hasn't a clue why either. It is also a story of misogyny & locally broken laws among God-fearing good old boys. There is always a simmering sense of menace even among friendly faces. Anna's subtlty in dealing with ingrate sexism is a delight to read. So is the smashing end when her cold fury finally lets rip.
