Now HERE'S an interesting album,
This review is from: Leisure Noise (Audio CD)
I hated "To Earth With Love", but that's probably because poor old Gay Dad got hyped off the face of the planet by NME, Melody Maker et al at the time.
The album is all over the place stylistically, as alluded to in the reviews below, and maybe that makes it hard to love as a collection of songs. I disagree. I like the variety on offer, and I thnk "Different Kind of Blue" and "Oh Jim" are quite, quite brilliant songs. And I also think the whole is held together by Mr Jones' vocals, which sound endearing and impassioned, without tipping over into fake histrionics.
Production values are very 1970s, but that isn't a bad thing. When the album was released, it had been a long time since I'd heard drums recorded and played like this. Long like 16ths on a ride cymbal!
I don't play this much, but I'm glad I own a copy, and it floats into my consciousness every now and then.
Oh, and I like "To Earth With Love" now. In fact I'm going to go and put it on now! Enjoy.
