I have to say that though I may be biased as I dearly love all things Fry, this is a great book and I have learnt more about the mechanics of poetry reading it than I have during 3 years of my OU Lit degree. I would recommend him to write the course material for the OU if I thought he would have the time or inclination. I have never found him patronising, if anything I think he attempts to break down class/cultural barriers and TOLT is a perfect example of this. The fact that the book is shot through with Fry's unique and sometime bawdy humour only makes the journey more pleasurable.
A lot of the criticism of this book from people in the 'business' purely derives from the fact that they don't like Fry killing the myths around poetry and explaining all the tricks of the trade to us nobodies. He is breaking poetry writing free from the clutches of academia - and good on him.
