This review is from: Is the Vicar in, Pet?: From the Pit to the Pulpit - My Childhood in a Geordie Vicarage (Kindle Edition)
Such an uplifting book that leaves you with a warm heart. Written as a biography in a child's eyes, Barbara Fox has done a marvellous job with this book, and has done the town of Ashington proud. Once a major mining village where the majority of men worked down the pits, the village was changed dramatically when those pits closed, but this isn't what this book is about. Barbara describes a year in her life when she was 9/10, growing up in a large Vicarage in Ashington where her kind parents would welcome anyone and everyone into their home with open arms. No one was turned away from their home and Barbara, together with her 3 siblings, grew up with the strong family values that all people matter.
This book really is a must-read. I couldn't put it down; started it on Saturday afternoon and finished it by Sunday night. It left me feeling proud of Northumberland (my home county) and delighted that I'd read such a beautifully-written take on a very contented childhood.
