If you are ill like me and need a tear jerking, light entertaining read then this is your book. It had well drawn characters, romantic tension and a satisfying ending. There was enough alternative lifestyle and laughs about the mainstream, it felt like I was amongst friends. Living in Leeds and visiting Manchester, I enjoyed the setting. Even though it was true to the formula, there wasn't too much about swanky flats and expensive clothes. When there was, it was about the others and not the main characters. Some of the clothes were whacky, thank goodness, and very individual. It had a strong moral thread with lots of human contradictions. I am 20 years older than Mhairi and an English graduate from York, but I could get most of the references and appreciate the music and art mentioned. That cheered me up. I loved the main characters. If this was comfort food, it would be best French pastries.
