Whilst the rest of the arts world was navel gazing and agonizing over the September 11th events as suitable source material, Berkoff - of course - simply got on with writing this insightful extended performance poem. In equal parts, informative, cynical, irreverent and lyrical it recounts the events of a blue sky Tuesday with his trademark sense of the drama of real people - albeit this time in extraordinary events. I was lucky enough to see him perform it in Edinburgh - and subsequently luckier to spend time talking with him about the piece (and a very mediocre review) afterwards. It was clear at that time it was a work he was proud of. The high price it demands is no temptation to part with my treasured copy.
