Excellent headunit with a few minor shortcomings
, 11 April 2013
This review is from: ALPINE IVE W530BT (Electronics)
iPod connectivity - plays music from your iPod and displays all the coverart and track information with the headunit's nice clean, sharp GUI
USB / MP3 CD compatibility - plays music from your USB storage device or from an MP3 CD. Search options aren't quite as good for these as with the iPod but still pretty decent
DVD playback - nice as an extra feature, but picture quality isn't amazing
Bluetooth audio - for some reason I have limited success with playing music off my phone by bluetooth through the headunit
Handsfree calling - works well. Voices are fairly clear and I don't have much problem getting others to hear me as long as I speak up
Voice recognition for handsfree calling would be really useful
WAV audio format is not supported when playing from USB/MP3 CD/iPod
Adding sat nav to this heaunit costs more than the headunit - better off getting a £100 TomTom
A bit slow with the searches and returning to music with iPod after making a call
Aside from some fairly minor niggles this is a great headunit for a very fair price, which had great sound quality. If you partner it with similar quality speakers/amps etc then you won't be disappointed and you really will get the best from it. The standout feature and my main use for it is with my ipod. Even if you have an old Nano or something lying about, this headunit is clearly designed to work best with iPods, so connect it up and stick it away in the glovebox. I've never had so much access to as much of my music in my car before - it's great!
