CMSMS Cookbook Review,
This review is from: CMS Made Simple Development Cookbook (Paperback)
I'm a graphic/website designer who uses CMS Made Simple quite a lot. Some of the templates available particularly those from Goran Ilic and Sofia Hauschildt were using techniques I wanted to know more about. So this CMS Made Simple Development Cookbook seemed to be the way to learn how to push the CMSMS advanced capabilities.
I found it helpful to read the Preface for "What this Book Covers" and to find out where to download the example code used. The extensive "Table of Contents" was good as I could quickly see what might be of use and also it would make it easier to reference back to the technique or code I wanted.
Chapter 1 outlined the utensils, the User Defined Tags, Tags and Modules with a checklist of factors to consider and a simple example of how to build each one. Each section progressively added more complexity but the structure of "Getting Ready", "How To Do It", "How It Works" and "There's More" was very useful in gaining an understanding and applying it.
For me the first 3 and bits of the last 2 chapters were all I needed. The chapters on Module making would be essential for those wanting to do so but were beyond what I wanted from this book.
It must be Samuel's writing style that really gets you into the core of it, explaining how to expand CMSMS then adding snippets of information to keep you thinking. His real world examples are, not so much to copy from (which you could usefully do), but to use as recipes to solve problems.
While working through the book I came across a number of things that were relevant to my projects using methods I'd not known before and it's made me think a little differently about how I deliver content to my clients, so for me this book has been very worthwhile.
Great book - only criticism - I wish it had a glossary.
