I came across Wolverine thanks to a sampler CD that included the first track from this album, called A House Of Plague. How to describe them? I could steal a description of Opeth's music, which was, 'like rays of sunlight breaking through into Hell' or some such thing; but I prefer Wolverine to Opeth.
Wolverine apparently started life as a death metal band, and you can hear the fossils of that still; when they rock, they rock. But they never sacrifice melody, and the singer can really sing. They're described as 'prog' these days, which comes across in their complex song structures and occasional weird tricks of rhythm, tempo and sound. Song themes are dark - disease, death, the Iraq war - but there are glimmers of light and optimism too. I think.
For fans of Porcupine Tree, Riverside - indeed, of any band that knows how to be apocalyptic and musical at the same time.
