Even though I went into this book knowing it was an adult novel and would be nothing like Harry Potter, I was still really looking forward to it and expecting it to be a good read but it was so poor that it was genuinely like it was written by a different author all together!
From the start she was trying too hard to try and prove that she was an adult writer by putting every controversial subject you could imagine into it when it just added nothing to the plot. Swearing after nearly every word, random sex scenes, boys watching porn, drug use, self harm, alcoholism, abusive parents, cyber-bullying, theft, prostitution, you name it, it was in there somewhere. Not only that but there was just no story to it! Absolutely nothing of interest happened and i'm still not completely sure what the point of the book actually was.
I fell in love with Harry Potter for the wonderful characters and magical writing, both of which sadly where the absolute opposite in this book. Every character encountered in this novel was either completely repulsive or boring as hell and the writing was more like a soap opera than a book by one of the world's best writers. Another problem I had with the writing was the amount of brackets that where used and the leagth of them, there often was an entire page or more of just text inside brackets.
If this was her first novel this would with out a doubt not have been published, it was purely who it was and not the quality story as to why it was published. We all know JK Rowling is an incredibly talented writer but I'm starting to wonder if she's only talented at writing the one type of books. Stick to children's stories JK!
