I went to a relay of the New York Met Parsifal, and picked up a leaflet about the next relayed opera - this. It seemed a bit over the top, inviting one to imagine a combination of Strauss, Wagner and Puccini, but I was curious and bought it anyway. You'd need a powerful imagination. The odd hint of Puccini, perhaps, otherwise more like Verdi on an off day. The performance cannot be faulted, but the music was mostly bland and left little impression, and the plot clunked along in a sometimes contrived way.If this is the best of Zandonai's dozen operas, as Kobbe says, it's no wonder we don't hear the others.
