This review is from: A Harbour Goes to War: The Story of Mulberry and the Men Who Made it Happen (Hardcover)
This book is a marvellous effort to provide us with the story of the Mulberry Harbours. Unfortunately it doesn't make the effort to explain clearly at the very beginning the significance of each of the many parts of the harbours with a diagram showing what they did and how they fitted together. The authors, understanding this very well themselves, wrongly assumed that this reader would find this easy to appreciate. I was interested in the Conway side of things, watching these as a small boy from the West Shore at Llandudno, but we moved quickly northwards. Reports, minutes, etc are all very well for historical accuracy but they usually contain little more than a well-drafted sentence-worth of information. This kind of book is excellent for the record, but hard pounding for the reader. Where the subject matter is as interesting as this, a best seller lurks; but not here.
