Sumptuous and engaging, The Tudors is a modern day soap opera which mixes historical fact with fiction. Not always successfully. Slammed by various historians such as Eric Ives,David Starkey, Retha M. Warnicke and Alison Weir - the drama series still engaged big audiences around the world.
Hugely popular and hugely over rated, The Tudors is just a big soap opera. And if you can accept it as such, then you have great TV but largely lousy history.
If you like the Tudor age then the highly acclaimed 1969 UK BBC drama series The Six Wives of Henry VIII is worth checking out. It was a monumental achievement. Less flashy than The Tudors, this award winning series stands up well. Another recommended drama series is the widely acclaimed Elizabeth R which stars Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth 1st (daughter of Anne Boleyn). Another UK BBC masterpiece and excellent addition to any collection.
