5.0 out of 5 stars A CD set to treasure, 8 Sept. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pennies from Heaven: Music from the TV Series & Other Songs from the 1930s (Audio CD)
Like so many others, I owe it to the Dennis Potter series of the late 70's for bringing this magnificant era of music to my attention. Despite my infatuation with all types of rock music fads, this dance band music of the 1930's has remained a constant and has been the catalyst for exploring more of the genre. This collection is superb value for money and it has been played to death since I purchased it to replace my now defunct cassette versions, probably bought in the early 80's. It is easy to forget that this was once the most exciting music in Britain and these bandleaders and vocalists were superstars. What would I have given to have been there - to hear that maudlin legato delivery of Al Bowlly with the Lew Stone Band - live !
This is as good a collection as any - buy and enjoy.

PLEASE can you help. I am confused, and there is a sense of urgency, because I am wanting to buy this kind of music on CD for my mum's birthday which is on the 21st of May. I am totally confused because thsi Pennies from heaven is being sold in two 'version'--The one I found had a picture of Bob Hoskins and fellow actress on the cover and for new is £65. It doesn't tell the customer the tracks, and neither does THIS one. Though both have supposedly 3 Discs. HOW is the customer to KNOW what thay are buying if they cannot see the tracklist. I am very let down by Amazon on this.

I also cannot understand how come this version --IF the same soundtrack from Pennies from heaven is so far cheaper than the other one. Can you help?

If you look at Amazon's site today, you will see a CD called 'Pennies from Heaven', featuring 26 of the songs from the BBC Dennis Potter series and retailing at £2.99.
What I have and what I reviewed is a 3 CD set loosely titled 'Pennies from Heaven' which features many of the songs from the series, some by the same artists and by others. Personally I'm happy with this as there is a wealth of music - over 40 tracks on the 3 CDs. If you specifically want a match with the series, then the the album at £2.99 is the one for you.

hmmm great timing. About four hours ago, I have gone and ordered the only two of the supposed original 3D set for £65.
This is surreal, and I am even more confused. I do not for example understand what you mean. HOW can one 3 pack cost 65 pounds and the one you mention cost under 3 freakin pounds??! it doesn't make any sense, and I feel like a joke is being played on me with this

I am sorry to hear of your dilemma over the Pennies from Heaven CDs. However, I merely wrote a review expressing my joy of the music of this era - it is not my intention to assume the role of customer adviser on behalf of Amazon. Please bear in mind that you can always return the goods if you so wish.
