3.0 out of 5 stars Ok , Dissapointing though, 4 Jan. 2012

This review is from: AVerMedia Game Capture HD (C281)-Record Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii HD Gameplay in Real-time up to 1080P (Personal Computers)
Got it for christmas, was ok but NO Memory pen worked apart from my brothers, Quality is ok, not great and cant even compare to the haupaugge HDPVR, Good size and easy to use.
Quality was the let down and the fact no usb pen would really work. Sent it back for a refund and gonna get the haupaugge.
If you are beginner, get it, if you have a decent sub base, go with the haupaugge.

Jack says:
Obviously the storage media is going to need certain write speeds and did you upgrade the firmware to 15mbps because that is much higher than the Happuage.

Don't bash the product before research.

Maybe don't bash the reviewer before your research?

You seem to assume their media wasn't of a supporting Class without asking. 15mbps is only equivalent to 1.9MBps and the lowly Class 2 is only 2MBps. Of course Avermedia will spec a higher Class to ride the bumps of no conformity and wiggle out of potential customer Enquiries and unhappiness, but there is ample scope the Flash Memory used was of sufficient speed. Maybe best ask the reviewer what they were using first?

You also seem to assume a 15 vs 13.5 Mbps will result in higher image quality and so the original reviewer, who seems to have seen the quality of both, is wrong without offering your own experience of the same? I could get a crude spy pen video and encode it to HD if I wanted, get a huge bitrate to entice the audience, and get absolutely no increase in Image Quality [IQ]. It is how that bandwith is used to resolve IQ that matters. Now the firmware that brought the 15mbps to the GCHD did increase IQ, but better that the HD PVR? From what I read from people who claim to have direct experienced both, the HD PVR seems overall to have a better IQ than the GCHD. In doing my own research I found there is limited info concerning which has the better IQ of the two units, with most reviews of the GC HD focusing on the 'No PC' requirement. Supposed 'Quality Tests' on Youtube are variously degraded by the conversion to Flv and even using an app like DL Helper you will not get an AVI DL of the source file. What we all need is one or more independent person[s] to cap the same game, doing the same section in the same way and then UL those raw caps to a file host so we can see the raw cap ourselves. I researched this before Christmas - the likely time the original reviewer ordered this - and to the best of my knowledge no one had done this.

With hard IQ info thin on the ground, I don't think the original reviewer did anything wrong in thinking this unit would perform 'much higher' than the HD PVR.
