1.0 out of 5 stars great series but heavily edited and censored dvd and blu ray, 29 Sept. 2013
This review is from: Deadman Wonderland The Complete Series Collection [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
I love the idea of the show and the execution and rate it really highly but the actual uk disks are censored really badly.

now don't get e wrong there is still a lot of swearing and violence but they have masked a lot with shadows and smoke that were never there in the true original japanese release. even the intro is censored and masked with shadow that was never there in the first place....

after looking into it. it seems that manga entertainment never even submitted the full version to the bbfc for rating and instead settled for the sub-par version...

for most people they may not care but when i know that this has been done to a series for no good reason (bearing in mind the disks are still 18's) I just feel cheated..

Did u watch it when it actually came out then for comparsion? only asking as Ive been waiting for this series to come out on DVD for so long since streaming it when it aired but if its been edited then its a case of whats the point, one third of the point of Deadman Wonderland was the violence. If a diffo yes it has been watered down (god sometimes i wish i lived in Japan or America instead of watered down UK for my anime (if it ever gets released sometimes) ) could u reply to me to save me wasting money pls

i watched the japanese blu ray elease originally as their tv broadcast was watered down. i think the US on is the same as uk. it has been watered down quite badly. bad enough for me to full on notice. they just blur lots of things out and put the white light over graphic close up violence that has become so popular. the uncut relase didn't have any of that. they ahve also added lots of shadows to hide more violence and nudity , including suring the intro sequence. the censoring didn't botehr me too much until around episode 5 when it becomes incredibly obvious. i'd suggest possibly holding out and seeing if they re-release it... it's a shame as i love the series but it just annoys me when they give us a watered down version. i find it wierd as it still contains quite a lot of violence on screen and lots of swearing but i just dunno. i personally would hold onto your money and be very wary of stuff released by manga entertainment in the coming months...

I think the 18 certificate was due to the language more than the gore as I have seen more gory series getting lower ratings.

As for the censorship. From what I remember of the original Japanese TV version, they have taken out some of the censorship while kept others (for example I am pretty sure that the Dog Race had far worse lese flare than was included on this DVD, unless my memory is playing tricks on me). Also I do know at least one person who said that they were actually thankful for the lens flare during Shinji's punishment game.

Personally though, while I do find it a little annoying it is not something that would take more than a star off for.

yeah. i think what boterhs me is the principle of censoring what would ahve probably passed bbfc certfication... if i hadn't seen the non-censored version i probably wouldn't be as bothered but its just annoying knowing that things have changed. i guess 1 star may be a bit harsh though.....

Actually, the UK BDs and Japanese BDs are pretty much the same. http://www.kira-reviews.com/blog/archives/category/deadman-wonderland
I don't think there is a totally uncensored version out there.
