Think twice - this book's not as friendly as the cover

This review is from: We're Going on a Bear Hunt (Paperback)
There's no faulting the quality of the writing or the illustrations here, with words & clever use of repetition building a haunting, dreamlike story of one family's outing, which is at least partly imagined. The actual end of the story itself though seems closer to a horror movie than a children's novel, as the family comes upon a grizzly bear who chases them all the way home, and tries to break through their front door. It's rare for a children's book to show animals threatening humans, but that's exactly what "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" does, in a fairly disturbing way. I'd think twice before reading it to a young child.
