With two boys under five, you can bet that we've read pretty much all of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's books. To be honest The Highway Rat isn't one of our favourites in the series. It's not a bad Children's book, simply not as remarkable as some of its predecessors. The character of The Highway Rat is simply not as likeable or as charming as other characters in the series. I know that he's supposed to be a "beast" and a "meanie" but in the hands of Donaldson and Scheffler even The Gruffalo was loveable. Furthermore Donaldson's rhymes feel a little lumpy, lazy and repetitive, "I am the Rat of the Highway, the highway, the highway, yes I am the rat of the highway".
By the end of the story my five year old son and I were not particularly concerned about what happened to the rat, but we still managed to find room for disappointed at the stories conclusion. Like I said, it's not a terrible book by any standard, but when the bar has been set so very high by other books such as The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom and The Snail and the Whale, this clearly isn't Donaldson and Scheffler's best work.
