Ah, wow, that was stupid. Like a mid-budget Hollywood movie directed by Sam Raimi during his late eighties period stupid. I love the idea and really enjoyed it for being so damn camp. Famke Janssen was great as the big bad, the special effects ranged from goofy to awful plus Renner and Arterton were solid if unspectacular. Wish they'd gone to a full 18 with the gore; it's already pretty damn gory (unexpected, one scene initiated a giggling fit) but it could've done with a bit more squelch and ooze.
But the world they create; I want to see more of that, only more insane. Full credit for the proper physical effects work, even if some of the makeup was overly theatrical; loved the Troll who reminded me of a creature from Labyrinth who wandered onto the wrong set. Could've done with more silly craziness of the sort we hear from some of the stories they tell of previous adventures. Apparently there's a sequel in the works, I'm looking forward to it - if only for how inevitably entertainingly stupid it'll be.
