mixed reaction from a huge Aqualung fan,
This review is from: Still Life (Audio CD)
I too was as excited as a chimp at feeding time when I learned of a prospective follow-up to Aqualung's powerful debut. After all, I had heard the new live track on the La Scala sessions and found it well worthy of a round of applause.
Although this new album is still characteristically Matt Hales, it isn't as distinctive as the first. Comparisons aside, 'Still Life' is still musically very good. The lead single is uplifting and easy to sing along to, and it is easy to familiarise the ear to the rest. Having dished out the critique for its lack of character, it is still a different style to the likes of Coldplay, Tom McRae and Damien Rice. The musician in you would appreciate the technical ability of the band, but it does seem a little too experimental in places.
Having said that, how many of us had to listen to 'Aqualung' (debut album) more than a few times to really appreciate it?
This album just proves how challenging it can be for all parties, having to emulate a contemporary classic.
