Don't expect any pop songs,
This review is from: Burning Blue Soul (Audio CD)
Having just heard this album for the first time in ten years it's actually much better than I remember - which is surprising as apart from a couple of songs it used to leave me completely cold.
If you're a The The fan wondering whether to give it a try, bear in mind that it's completely different to anything else Matt Johnson ever did. Written in a pub basement, it sounds nothing like The The, being far more experimental and avant-garde, the only recognisable The The sound being his voice, and even this is buried beneath layers of effects (reputably because during the recording sessions he became convinced that he couldn't actually sing).
The overall effect creates an album of ghostly, sometimes spikey drugged out fuzz - which is ironic as he claimed to have been on nothing stronger than orange juice when he wrote it.
