It's been a long time since I was so pleasantly surprised at a film. I went to see it at the cinema, expecting it to reasonably good (as I like fantasy films/books), but it was so much better than that. It uses modern effects without shouting about it. They blend into the background so you don't notice them, but at the same time if they weren't there the film would be visually rubbish. Sure, it's not an action packed thrill-fest like Lord Of The Rings or Harry Potter, but that's the beauty of it. It's just a pleasant family film that's really enjoyable for anyone who likes fantasy. It's almost like a film version of a Japanese amine movie, it got that kind of feeling to it. It might sound strange, but in some ways but I can compare it to the 1960 adaptation of Swiss Family Robinson. Although there is violence in the film (ie people being killed), it's done in such a way that children won't be upset by it. They'll just be laughing on and enjoying the film. I'll be looking forward to buying this and watching it again soon. The only negative point is that people who don't like fantasy films/books will find this film less appealing than most, and might want to give it a miss.
