I didn't know what to expect when I bought this (which debuted over 30 years before I was born), though I've seen several other ITV series of the period. I found it to be quite decent. I admit the sets are a bit crude, and there is the rare/occasional technical fault (a couple stumbled lines, etc...was this show live?), but even so it's quite enjoyable. The writing is quite good, and the most of the cast are good too.
The four episodes on the disc consist of "Race Against Time" (Parts 1 & 2, written by Barry Baker) and "The Missing Cheese" (Parts 1 & 2, written by Lloyd Barclay), and these episodes are from 1957. These episodes obviously come from telerecordings, and these prints could do with some restoration (there are noticeable scratches at the start of each episode). Even so they are quite watchable.
It's a shame only four episodes survive, but even so, at least there's something left to view, which isn't the case with many 1950s series.
The bonus features consist of the sole surviving episode of "Skyport" (from 1959), a spin-off featuring the "Ginger Smart" character. The premise of the show is interesting, and it's a shame there isn't more available to make a better judgement of the series. The tone of "Skyport" was quite different to "Shadow Squad" based on the episode.
I do hope Network releases more ITV series of the 1950s on DVD.
