This review is from: Beginning SQL Server 2008 for Developers: From Novice to Professional (Expert's Voice in SQL Server) (Paperback)
Prior to reading this book, the only database management system that I had worked with was Microsoft Access and I had no knowledge of any enterprise level database management system. I did however have a Masters degree in `IT with Software Development' and have had a fair amount of experience of using ADO.NET and DAO with Access, so I wasn't IT illiterate.
I found this book very good indeed as an introductory text. I also had the books Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Bibleand MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-433): Microsoft SQL Server 2008 - Database Development Book/DVD Package at my disposal. However, I very rarely had to cross-reference them.
The only parts of the book that appeared to me to be unclear was the section on `Indexing a View' (pp. 325 - 327) - I couldn't get the code to work there because I had not created some of the tables that the View referenced with `ANSI_NULLS ON' - and the last chapter's code for creating web-based reports using SQL Server's `Reporting Services' - I had a problem with access permissions which I was unable to resolve.
Other than these two issues I had no problems with the book and found it extremely helpful as well as very accessible, i.e. it was an easy read!
I would definitely recommend this book as an introductory text!
