This 2003 EMI Gold (24 track) compilation covers most of The Animals singles (A's, B's & EP's) they released for the label all on one disk. This was the time when The Animals were in their original incarnation, the supposed 'best period' with Chas Chandler (bass), Alan Price (keyboards), John Steel (drums) and Hilton Valentine (guitar), their music during this time was blues, rock and soul with Eric Burdon's excellent soulful and powerful gritty vocals on top.
Between 1964 - 1965 The Animals released two albums, The Animals and Animal Tracks where some or most of these songs on here were culled from and released as EP's and singles. Just before they left EMI Records Price departed the group, he was replaced by keyboardist Dave Rowberry, they still carried on recording with EMI releasing classics like 'We Gotta Get Out Of This Place' and 'It's My Life', between 1966 - 1968 Eric Burdon revamped The Animals personnel, changed the style of the music, switched to a couple of other record labels and got credited as Eric Burdon And The Animals and released a further six also albums.
As for this CD the mastering is excellent with a good clear sound, though the notes inside and original EP/singles sleeve covers are kept to the minimal, despite this it is still a great one CD compilation covering The Animals period on EMI Records.
If you want to get a compilation with the 'new' Animals I recommend Polydor's 15 track compilation, The Best Of Eric Burdon And The Animals 1966 - 1968, (the one with the blue faced Eric) it covers this period well, on a last note check out The Best Of Eric Burdon & WAR.
