In my opinion a top notch recording of a landmark score. Film scores have gained gradual acceptance into the concert repertoire alongside their symphonic cousins, and we are now seeing the re-recording of several important scores. Just as we might like to hear several interpretations of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, then why not take some of these fantastic film scores which are important musical reference points in their own right?
McNeely and the RSNO are able to inject new dynamism and freshness into a varied score with softer lyrical passages, and its nautical nature, whilst delivering the more obviously ominous and unnerving percussive elements. Highly recommended for fans of John Williams.
