I thought Pillars of Earth was absolutely brilliant and this sequel is every bit as good. The story is set in medieval Kingsbridge, but a great deal of time has passed since POTE. The story here reminded me a little of Mystic River, in that it concerns the lives of a few children who are forever bonded into adulthood by a horrific thing that happens in their youth. A fine follow up that doesn't get boring at any point. Sure to be as big a hit as it's predecessor.
