The author is a brilliant writer but I found this book a slog. All McCarthys usual writing skills are on display: poetic descriptions of place, dialogue that evokes the period. But the story is not compelling and the writing is drowned in the page after page of bloodshed. I wouldn't bother with this one at all.

Lewis Dye says:
Totally disagree. This is a brilliant novel with a gripping story and magnificently powerful writing. To dismiss it as you do is unjustified and nobody should be put off this great great book by your review.
