Too many people seem to gush over this album just because it's Minutemen and has good production. Fact is, it's not a patch on any of their earlier material. It may be along the same lines as 'Project Mersh' but there's a world of difference between the two. Where Mersh had strong songs, this had a selection of half-baked, scattershot semi-ideas which never really come to anything and make for a less than satisfying listen. By the time you've waded through the cover versions, novelty songs and filler there's very little left of any substance. Boon's lyrics- clever on their other records, are now just yelled political tirades. It's like sitting through particularly preachy anarcho punk. Government bad. Fine. Now stop. Each time I give this record another go I get to the end and think 'is that it?' I would highly recommend anything by this band as they made some incredible music, with the exception of this release. It really isn't worth it.
