This review is from: Cello Concerto/Cello Suites Nos. 1 And 2 (Barbirolli, Bbcso) (Audio CD)
Being very familiar with other previously released recordings by DuPre of this work, I was not expecting that much from another recording, but was interested to hear. I don't usually write a review - but I was so captured and impressed that I felt compelled to... This is so honest and emotive. Overflowing with drama excitement and pathos.
What makes it better (for me) that the studio recording by Barbirolli is the fact it is live. One take. Thus more 'honest'. Unlike the studio recording pieced together from 10 plus takes.
With this the 'narrative' of the piece is more captivating and convincing but not perfect - some tempo issues here and there and the odd cough. But this can be forgiven..
ALso I get to hear more of the cello as the orchestra in this recording seems quieter than the studio recording. Thanks to Barenboim for agreeing to the release of this.
