Before reading Prior Knowledge, I thought I had a fairly good grasp of the whole Kennedy story for a non-US citizen. I'd seen bits and bobs of documentaries over the years, of course, and I'd seen the Oliver Stone movie, JFK. There's a line in that film where the chief investigator says, 'We're through the looking glass now.' Well, if I wasn't before, I am now.
From what must have been a mountain of source material (as well as personal contact with some of the people actually involved), the author has managed to frame a factual narrative that had me turning pages like a thriller - I read it in only a few days. To say that I was surprised by some of the revelations about JFK, the Kennedy family, and US politicians of the era in general, would be an understatement. 'Alarmed' might be a better word.
For me, the best thing about Prior Knowledge is that it doesn't just present the reader with non-specific conspiracy theories, it actually leads you step by step through the processes leading up to the assassination like a docu-drama, and tears down, one by one, the arguments against a conspiracy. Everything is clearly delineated and explained, from the Kennedy clan's connections with the Mafia to the dirty reality that lay behind the myths of the 'Camelot' administration, and from the absolute impossibility of a lone gunman to the incredibly blatant, astoundingly unsubtle cover-up that followed.
In short, I would recommend this book to anyone with even the slightest interest in the subject. It's a real eye-opener.
