This review is from: Intimate Partner Sexual Violence: A Multidisciplinary Guide to Improving Services and Support for Survivors of Rape and Abuse (Paperback)
This is a must have for practitioners working in the field of domestic abuse or sexual violence. The book gives an excellent overview of IPSV, the effects and appropriate responses from practitioners (counsellors, law enforcement etc) as well as looking at needs of specific groups of survivors e.g. Rural, teenagers etc. The book is full of well researched facts as well as practical tips for how to handle cases, common themes and problems and key phrases to use (and avoid!)
Despite being frighteningly common IPSV is the hidden crime within domestic abuse, as the book so excellently puts it "if a partner is controlling, abusive and violent in the kitchen, the living room and in public, why would he stop the abuse at the bedroom door?". For years the field of domestic abuse has failed to address, identify and intervene appropriately with IPSV. This book addresses gaps in services and gives practitioners the tools to support survivors and help them on their healing journey. It is not directed solely at academics, but rather at anybody wishing to give practical support to survivors...basically, it's easy for lay people to read and understand whilst still being challenging and informative.
This book is crucial for any practitioner working with domestic abuse.
