Excellent and sympathetic performances of Prokofiev's sonatas. All are very fine works and the first sonata may surprise listeners with its darker tone, reminiscent of his sixth symphony; combining bitterness with a nostalgia for happier times. This was completed after the second, after World War II; it is one of Prokofiev's true masterpieces. The Second and the sonata for two violins are more classical and lyrical in tone. These fine performances make the best possible case for these works.
