It's not like the old stuff...but so what?,
This review is from: So Divided (Audio CD)
Longstanding fans seem to be lamenting the fact that they don't rock anymore, since their days of "Source Tags & Codes". Having not heard the album, I can't really comment on whether they were a better Punk / Rock band or this prog rock ensemble (somebody described them as emo, but I can't see that).
I quite enjoyed their last album (Worlds Apart), though there were some songs I found a bit flat & dull, mainly due to their desire to be "weird". I said at the time they remind me of The Flaming Lips or Modest Mouse, and that is still the case here.
Similarly to the last album, it opens with a short instrumental. What is different though is that they seem to have learned how to really play with your emotions, lifting your spirits with the rocking "Stand In Silence", mellowing you out with the beautiful "Witch's Web", and bringing a smile to your face with the jaunty "Eight Days of Hell". Then you get 'epic' tracks like "Life" that take you on an emotional rollercoaster. The most important difference though is that they manage to do all this without boring the pants off you.
For me, it's a much better album overall than "Worlds Apart". It's more emotive, less quirky and just hangs together better. Give it a chance, I think this one is going to be a real grower.
Of course, if you are into testosterone fuelled fist-pumpers, give this one a miss, you won't get a lot out of it.
