3.0 out of 5 stars Borderline porn, but funny., 29 Mar. 2014
This review is from: High School Dxd: Complete Series Collection [DVD] (DVD)
As far as the anime genre ecchi goes there is always something wrong with them, mostly that the plot isn't very good. Thing's like High school of the Dead would be known to some people for it's flashing of girls pants every five minutes, and others shows, like Ikki Tousen or Queens Blade, are known for showing off boobs. Some would say that ecchi is borderline porn, but even though High School DXD comes into the category of showing off as many pants and boobs as possible it is still one of the funniest animes I have ever watched.

The plot revolves around the main character, Issei Hyodo, who has gone to this once all girls school, with his best friends, to try and get themselves girlfriends, or even laid. When Issei is asked out by a cute, innocent girl he is overjoyed, until she kills him when on they're date. Issei is then brought back as a devil, and has to serve the house of Gremory.
While the plot for the show is quite good and there are some interesting story arcs that doesn't stop the sheer amount of fan-service from getting in the way of the shows, or even that episodes, story. Literary every episode has boobs and pants being forced on screen every episode. Sometimes it can be funny, but other times it is hard to take certain moments seriously when the characters walk into explosions and come out with no damage done, apart from them losing their clothes.
Also various episodes feel rushed in places, which can be forgiven, but the last episode feels too rushed in comparison to other episodes. They could have split the last episode into two parts or make it that little bit longer, so that way the ending doesn't feel all that disappointing. At the end you feel like that the ending could have been better. But was journey fun? **** yeah. This show was hilarious.
While the downsides make the show a bit disappointing the funny moments do make up for everything. There is so many moments that made me laugh to the point of hysterical that I lost count. There is always something in the show to love.

Apart from the main characters there isn't many other characters are memorable, apart from the main bad guy, but even then they feel a bit cliché. The bad guys are pretty much power hungry or interested in getting Rias.
Issei Hyodo serves as both the comedy relief of the series, as well as the main protagonist. While I'm not too keen on the main character's being there for comic relief, because they tend to be quite forgetful and not that interesting, Issei was different. It wasn't that he was interesting, he was just a funny character. He's pretty much the average teenage boy, but over-exaggerated. He spends most of his time just thinking about girls and boobs.
Rias is the leader of this club they have on school premises, like that sounds familiar. Asia is a nun who is also there for comic relief. Akeno can control thunder, and get's off on hurting people with it. Koneko is a mighty, trash talking character who spends half the time calling Issei a pervert. Then we have Yuuto Kiba who is supposed to be...who is pretty much the equivalence of Haruhi Suzumiya's Itsuki Koizumi.
As you can see there's not I can say about the other character's without going into SPOILER territory, that and you don't get to know much about the characters. Which is shame because even though they are memorable you just don't spend that long learning about them. The whole series pretty much tries to force most of the character development onto Rias and Issei.

While the animation isn't fantastic, or great, it at least looks decent. There really isn't much to say about the animation apart from it looks like a fairly standard budget anime. It isn't high budget, like Soul Eater or Blue Exorcist, but it isn't low budget, like Higurashi. Not much stood out apart from the beginning of the opening, and midway through the ending. I was surprised that midway through the ending the female characters were pole dancing. If you don't believe me watch the ending on youtube: [...].

While there isn't much to say about the score/soundtrack to the series I can definitely say that the opening was quite interesting to listen to, and the ending wasn't as interesting. The ending sounded more like it that it belonged in a Magical Girl series while opening kind of suited the series.
The dub was good as well, kind of what you expect from Funimation. There was a ton of new voices, but with a fare few familiar voices. The most noticeable familiar voices were that of Sonny Straight (Hughes in Fullmetal Alchemist, and Krillen in Dragon Ball Z), Christopher Sabat (Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z, and Armstrong also from Fullmetal Alchemist), along with Brittney Karbowski (Selim Bradley in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Black Star in Soul Eater, and Misaka in A Certain Magical Index and A Certain Scientific Railgun).

While the show is entertaining, funny as heck to the point that you could be laughing to death, and has an interesting plot there are still a few bad things about it but they are evenly weighed out by the good stuff. It's just a shame that there isn't going to be another series, so that we can learn more about the other characters. Oh, wait. There is! Another series is going to be coming out soon titled High School DXD New.
Anyway based on story, characters, animation, sound, and my own personal enjoyment I rate this show three stars out of five with a recommendation to stream rather than buy. Unless you enjoy watching funny anime's then I recommend to buy the DVD at low price, and if you enjoy ecchi anime then I still recommend to buy the DVD. Unless you like seeing cartoon boobs in full 1080p HD.
