A Sort of Jamboree,
This review is from: Strauss: Die Fledermaus -- Royal Opera House [DVD] (DVD)
I certainly wouldn't recommend this to anyone as a definitive 'Fledermaus'. For anybody who is a fan of Joan Sutherland (or indeed of Marilyn Horne and/or Luciano Pavarotti) then there is half an hour or so here which will be priceless. The operetta itself is sung - often indifferently sung, it has to be said - in a sometimes-comprehensible English translation(without subtitles). The mindless jabber (masquerading as comedy) at the beginning of Act III drove me almost to dementia. A touching farewell, then for Dame Joan, but hardly a recommendable 'Fledermaus'. Credit must be given to Richard Bonynge who conducts the whole thing with consummate style and idiom - but he has conducted it on other recorded performances. In this repertoire, as in bel canto, few conductors share his mastery.
