This review is from: Rise of the Planet of the Apes [DVD] (DVD)
I am shocked that anyone could give this movie less than 5 stars. It is hands-down the BEST movie of the decade, possibly 5 decades; and this coming from someone who has hated every one of these Planet of the Apes movies thus far, just never got into them at all. All of it comes together beautifully, and the main character is magnificent (understatement of the century) - his coming of age from innocent and vulnerable primate to the disillusioned, bitter, but nevertheless compassionate ape is exceptionally portrayed. the contrast between the vicious, insensitive humans and the restrained apes makes it very easy to cheer the latter. the musical score, the videography, the cast, the acting, the story - all the elements fit together so well to make a perfect package - ive seen it now at least 4 times and it never gets tiring or boring. the only downside to this is Franco's weak acting: when someone you think of as your child refuses to come home with you, i think you'd do more than look shocked and then walk away, dont you? and when he sees for himself that his 'child' can talk, his reaction is so bland. no goodbyes, no 'stay safe', just a miserable 'go'....but even this negative is not enough to take away from the brilliance of this movie. I cant wait for the next installment, I just hope its directed and produced by the same folks, they obviously know what they're doing.
