Good, but not spectacular,
This review is from: Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo Wii U) (Video Game)
First and foremost- I wanted to love this game with a passion, I really did- I own all 8 Mario Kart games, and I also pre ordered it (not from Amazon, hence the non 'verified purchase' tag on here) the very first moment I could, even shelling out (no pun intended) on the limited edition which came with the blue shell- as for that; a bit overpriced to say the least but a cool little collectible all the same...
Think my overriding view on this game a Week on is one of disappointment. Yes, the graphics are beautiful, the replays (especially the slow-mo's) are sometimes spectacular, and appreciate Nintendo's integration with uploading clips to Youtube, although this takes forever, even to upload a 30 second highlight reel (i'm blaming this more on my slow wi-fi connection than anything else mind) It has a very polished, slick feel to it which is becoming more and more a trademark of Nintendo games as the releases come.
Have a few issues with this game. First and foremost, there seems to be a lack of replay value on here- 16 new tracks, 16 reworked tracks seems to be the norm for Mario Kart games and has been this way for a long while now...Would appreciate it more if Nintendo could give us more track variety- Even 20 new tracks would be a start!! Within 24 hours i'd unlocked all the tracks, all the characters and a vast amount of the customised kart/wheel/glider combo's.
The anti-gravity mechanism is decent enough, but doesn't seem to be that big a game changer- It's not as much of a wow factor as i'd anticipated it would be- Yes, it's fun riding sideways in Thwomp Ruins for example, but it doesn't feel that big a factor to warrant such a song and dance.
Another point i've picked up is how (especially in the higher CC classes) driving skill doesn't come into play so much as luck- The amount of times i've been leading a race on the last lap only to be hit first by a red shell, then a green shell or a fireball to leave you in 5th/6th is totally and utterly infuriating; The older Mario Kart games relied more on the skill of the driver and not the luck of making it through a race without being bombarded by weapon upon weapon to the point you can't even recover your race- All the worse for those trying to get 3 star ratings in each of the cups!
Last point, is the character roster. Adding the koopalings was a great idea (I usually play as Roy) but the roster seems unnecessary large- Baby Rosalina?? Pink Gold Peach??! I'll pass thank you very much....
All in all, a very 'meh' kind of game. It doesn't feel a massive improvement on Mario Kart 7 for example, (think I actually preferred that game) and not my favourite in the series- It just doesn't offer too much new to give it that 10 out of 10, A* grade.
I do realise i'm now going to get bombarded with downvote after downvote for this, such is the way Amazon reviews work- If you can't give a product an automatic 5 star review then thats how these things work. Just my humble opinion and i'd be interested to hear what some of you have to say (in terms of constructive criticism if you feel the need to criticise please!!)

Hey not at all - everybody is entitled to their opinion here.

Well, thanks very much!! Just the way Amazon works though- Given any product, if the reviewer gives a 1 or 2 star review he'll get ridiculed by all the fan boys of said product for not giving it a 5 star rating. As I said above, just found the game to be disappointing is all!

Yes, you are entitled to your opinion and you weren't all that impressed with the game so, you gave it a 3 star rating. At lest you acknowledged the game is still good, just not as good as you expected. Nobody can criticize you for that! But when someone gives a good product a 1 star rating when it clearly deserves more, then they should be ridiculed.

Again, cheers!! Tried to be reasonable in justifying my argument and know it will get some people vexed but what the hey...

we marked as a 5 star as we got the free download game. puts this game at £20 & monster hunter £20 approx. Excellent Value. have to agree that we did slightly over mark the game though!! Great game but Nintendo are playing way to safe & careful at the moment. we do as gamers need a shock & surprise at some point. were are these games? 4 star would be a proper mark which is still great.

The free game promo was a great move, especially as the majority of the games were quality ones at that!! Hope Nintendo pulls all the stops out at E3 next Week and gives us one or two surprises...

Yes looking out for something very big to be revealed by Nintendo at E3, perhaps something that exploits its unusual hardware to the full.

New Star Fox announced- Awesome!!! Also, Splatoon looks really good fun too- Not enough of the Zelda was teased, but looked good all the same. Mario Maker looks like it could be a lot of fun and i'm sure there were one or two others that caught my eye that have slipped my mind...

P. Marck says:
The review was very honest and I feel the same way about Mario Kart 8 (or Infinity, if you will) but the game itself is still a ton of fun and addictive.
Still, for those reviewers saying MK8's "The Best Mario Kart to date!" that goes to prove how unreliable they may be, but then again, it's their opinion, after all.
I'm playing now with Rosalina as usual on a bike, I don't really like using karts or quad bikes very much, it just feels too samey if I'd do.

Absolutely- Each to their own!! Just ultimately feel it doesn't offer a huge difference from 7- Out of my circle of friends, the ones who were most impressed with the game were the ones who hadn't played a game in the series for Years.
