At last a version with a full Libretto,
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Shostakovich - The Nose (Mariinsky Orchestra and Chorus/Gergiev) Includes full libretto in both Russian and English (Audio CD)
For years the definitive version of "The Nose" was Rozhdestvensky's version on Melodya - originally on vinyl.
This reappeared on CD The Gambler, The Nose with The Gambler BUT lacking a proper Libretto in English or Russian. A limited Synopsis was present. There are Libretto's for the opera "The Nose" ( in English ) which can be downloaded of the net if you search.
This latest performance by the Marinsky soloists under Gergiev , is a worthy challenge to this seminal version of the opera and has the Libretto in both Russian and English. ( The Marinsky label is a bit like the LSO series of reasonable priced discs)
It does lack the opera The Gambler but at ca £15 it is excellent value for money.
Gergiev's versions of all Russian music never lacks for enthusiasm.
As to which vesion is better this will be a very personal choice. I enjoyed both versions.
