Good fantasy novel, but not my favourite in the series,
This review is from: Magic's Pawn (The Last Herald Mage) (School & Library Binding)
This was the first book by M. Lackey I read (as a 15 year old), I am in my 20s now and am a fan of the entire Valdemar series.
As mentioned in some other reviews, Vanyel (the main character), is very whiney and prone to wallowing in self-pity, and although its understandable to some extent given the way he is often treated & what he goes through, it can also get annoying after awhile.
I think this is simply one of Vanyels flaws though, he is immature, and at times selfish. The other characters often find his whining irritating too, and he is called up on it by several of them, more than once.
The book is about Vanyel growing up emotionally as much as it is about him becoming a Herald and learning to use/control his powers.
Once the book gets going its a compelling read with plenty of action, a dose of tragedy, and some very sweet scenes mixed in
The Valdemar series as a whole is one of my favourite book series, and I recommend it(and M.Lackeys books in general)for any fan of the fantasy genre.
