Fully worthy of its four Oscar nominations,

After its debut at the Sundance, this Lousiana-set movie went on to snag 4 Oscar nominations - and it's not hard to see why. In particular, Quvenzhané Wallis - five at the time of filming - is an absolute revelation. It's notoriously difficult to find decent child actors - for every Haley Joel Osment (see The Sixth Sense - 2 Disc Collector's Edition [DVD] ) there are 10 Jake Lloyds (see Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace [DVD] ). But Wallis delivers a rare performance here, every bit worthy of her Oscar nomination.
The idea that reality is a machine in which every part - however small - has its role, is woven in to the plot, and this leads to a gradual switch from an apparent gritty realism to a more fantastical approach, somewhat in the style of Where The Wild Things Are [DVD] . However, don't imagine this is a kids film. Children are going to find this difficult; the 12 certificate it has been given in the UK is understandable in some respects - albeit a shame given the age of the heroine - but also younger children are likely to find the more dramatic scenes difficult to relate to. Meanwhile teens probably won't have the the attention span.... it's really a film made for adults, full of emotion and pathos.
