A big disappointment,
This review is from: The Story of Beautiful Girl (Paperback)
I really looked forward to reading this and the first quarter or so was a great read, so much so that I could not put it down. However, gradually, the style and content changed so much that is became dull, monotonous and completely unbelievable. I was shocked that something that started so well deteriorated so much, and felt cheated. Homan and Lynnie were not believable characters and I found it hard to follow what happened to Homan. A label on the book I bought suggested that anyone who liked 'The Help' wold love this book - that was far from true in my case. The only thing I continued to admire is that one of the main characters, Martha, is a 70 year old who embarks on a whole new way of life in order to safeguard the future of the baby who she names as Julia. It was refreshing to have a fiction with a 70 year old playing a major role.

I liked 'The Help' and did not love 'Story of Beautiful Girl'. Hard to stay interested in and follow once 20 or 30 years have passed. Felt I was being lectured sometimes and overwhelmed at other times by descriptive text.
