This review is from: The Guts (Hardcover)
I am a long time admirer of Roddy Doyle and have read and collected his works for both adults and children. This book has made me feel so sad not to like it. With personal family experience of cancer and its treatment i was at once taken up in that thread of the plot, and it was that which got me to struggle through the first 100 paes or so before I gave up. I found the dialogue too tedious and irriating to continue, and I quite accept that it may be me rather than the book that is to blame. In an episode of "Father Ted"', Donal comes out with such greetings to Ted as "How are ye Ted, ye gobshite ye"' and "Hallo Ted, ye oud bollix". Ted asks, "Donal, have you been reading them Roddy Doyle books again?" It is perhaps a good thing that Donal didnt have access to "The Guts". Sorry Roddy, this book is not for me.
