Intriguing Slick Entertainer,
This review is from: Limitless [DVD] (DVD)
'Limitless' is a thriller film that released in 2011 to mainly positive reviews and became a surprise hit at the box-office. The film is an adaptation of the novel, The Dark Fields authored by Alan Glynn.
The movie tells the story of Eddie Morra (Bradley Cooper), a down and out struggling writer who is unsuccessful in life. He then starts taking a special drug (NZT-48), which allows him to use 100% of his brains power making him super smart in all ways. As he uses this power to become successful, unwanted attention is drawn to him.
The movie has an interesting start, rattles along at high speed, provides good one-liners, has plenty twists and turns and ends with satisfying climax.
The movie is smart, but with such an intriguing premise it could've been much smarter by exploring mind-bending complex avenues. The makers played it safe in the end.
The feature has an unlimited Bradley Cooper from start to finish. Cooper proves his versatility as an actor, producing a charming performance whilst looking suave at the same time. Robert De Niro (Carl Van Loon) doesn't have much screen time but when he appears, it's enjoyable. Abbie Cornish is average as Cooper's love interest.
Neil Burger directs the movie with style and creates plenty of excitement. He also adds a hint of action to the mix, which adds an edge. The visual effects along with the cinematography (Jo Willems) is stunning. The background music by Paul Leonard-Morgan is cool.
'Limitless' is a fresh and fun thriller with panache.
