This review is from: Tune a Day for Trumpet or Cornet: Book 1 (Paperback)
As a trumpet teacher I find this book invaluable, as it clearly sets out the basics for learning the instrument. The book covers not only the notes and fingerings, but also techniques such as breathing properly, how to hold the instrument correctly, and basic theory concepts such as rhythm and time. Most importantly, as the title suggests, the pupil is able to "play something" right from the beginning, and can also learn for themselves by following the instructions in the book. The only setback with this book (and indeed many in the series) is that it is slightly out-of-date, and so some of the "tunes" are rather obsolete. Many tunes are also American folk tunes, and there is rather too heavy an emphasis on Christmas carols, particularly with regard to some of the duets at the back of the book. However, these minor faults should not deter anyone from purchasing the book; it is one the best in the range of beginner literature for the instrument, and the whole concept of "A Tune A Day" is faultless.
