There is nothing I like better as a reader than a good scary book....and this is a really great one! Excellent writing with a taut narrative, high on atmosphere building from the get off, the plot hits the floor running and never lets up on the tension and shocks. It took me a few pages to get used to the almost staccato dialogue but before then,I was already hopelessly hooked. A book though provoking and visceral in places ( the chilling and accurate war injury descriptions), not a word is gratuitous or out of place. I couldn't put it down...an old, well-worn cliche but in this case completely true. Bestwick creates fully dimensional , totally believable characters, a strong and accurate setting and an original and genuinely creepy story...what more could a reader seeking a first class horror book want?
British horror writing is enjoying a wonderful resurgence of high quality, original and suitably frightening books by new authors. Simon Bestwick joins the vanguard of this home grown talent. Just make sure you have a light ready to switch on in your bedroom!
