This story left me oscillating between a deep enjoyment and a smidgeon of disappointment (gasp!). There is no need to explain the deep enjoyment - Ms Singh is an outstanding author, her books remaining on your bookshelf and To Be Read (and reread list) list for, like, forever and ever! I've read the Archangel series several times myself and will no doubt read them all again, purely to refresh my memory of course, 😉 at the release of the next book in 2014.
The smidgeon of disappointment is derived from a slight frustration around some of the actions (or lack of) in the storyline. Why didn't Rafael investigate the growing mark on his face - the Refuge has some of the finest historians in, well...history. Maybe then the second smidgeon of disappointment/shock wouldn't have arisen...the sudden appearance of the Legion. No hints, warning, rumour...nada. I felt this particular aspect, while so exciting, seemed to be dropped in at the last moment, possibly when comparing how powerful the other Archangels were becoming and Rafael needing an edge to help balance out his "becoming more human everyday" weakness? But perhaps there's a strong reason for this cliff-hanger as we can now rest assured that there may be several more books in the pipeline - and I for one will be impatiently holding out for them. Whatever the reason, we can all breathe easier as Rafael continues to grow in strength, something he'll need if the coming war reaches fruition.
So with that clarified, let's look at the story...and heaven's, what a fantastic one it was! Our favourites, Rafael and Elena continue to WOW us with a love that transcends time and power, her, a baby angel and he, one of the most powerful archangels to exist in recent times. We watch as both continue learning how to achieve perfect balance between worlds so very different; fragile, short-lived, vibrant humans and angelic beings of such power, longevity and pragmatism. What a joy it is for me to be a part of their loving journey!
A surprising, but pleasing twist from the original story-line was the relationship between Elena and her father, Jeffrey. Hopefully this will allow Elena to leave some of her trust issues behind and begin the journey of healing her childhood emotional scars.
The storyline itself was, as expected, superbly written and included enough emotional suspense that I, for one, was left heartbroken at the tragic loss of so much life, both angelic and vampire. Balancing that out, however, are the poignant moments between other members of the Seven, Ms Singh giving a little insight to each of them that leaves you yearning for more. I am so looking forward to Bluebell's, Naasir's and Aodhan stories!
Overall, Ms Singh has excelled once again - I highly recommend you read the entire mesmerising series because when you do, you'll enter a world so filled with excitement, intrigue, abiding love, steamy passion and suspense you won't ever want to leave!
