This review is from: Nostalgia For The Light [DVD] (DVD)
At one point in the film the astronomer says that his search for distant stars and galaxies is similar to that of the relatives of Pinochet's "desaparecidos": the difference is that he sleeps well at night while they probably don't. It may be true that to make a comparison between astronomy and the search for victims of a brutal dictatorship may stretch the imagination and reason and that at times the director overdoes the aesthetic shots but this film stuck in my mind and I found its conclusions very much to the point: we are (or should be) driven by the need to know, to understand and find peace once our past has been fully explained. Knowledge of past crimes, closure for the victims and discovering the origin of the universe and life proceed from the same intellectual discourse while burying or sweeping under the carpets past crimes is wrong and unhealthy. Historical examples of conscious oblivion (Turkey/Armenia, Stalin's Gulag, Rwanda, Yugoslavia, Japan) are too many. People need to know to find peace. This film shows us how to in a very poetic and forceful way.
